What your MEP doesn't want you to know

Members of the European Union Parliament personal pension contributions are taken from office expenses.

No one checks whether the politician actually pays anything into the fund from his own salary. Many in Brussels believe that a "large proportion" of Euro-MPs are using their office payments to get a free second pension on top of national schemes. (Telegraph)

Task for Today

If you do nothing else today, sign this Petition calling on the Prime Minister to refrain from signing any agreement to create a new European Union treaty without first holding a referendum to ascertain the opinion of the British public.

The Prime Minister is distorting the nature of the proposed treaty by insisting that it will not be a 'constituional' treaty. Anything that alters the relationship between the United Kingdom and Brussels must affect the way we are governed and undermines the ability of our Parliament to govern on behalf of the British people. This is a new EU constitution by stealth, a step that was rejected by the voters of France and The Netherlands

Phase No 2

By calling it a "treaty," the current German EU presidency has begun reviving the stalled approval process for a new constitution for the European union.

By leaving the word "constitution" out of the discussion, Angela Merkel hopes to get her colleagues to agree on a document that lacks the grave connotations and still manage to give the EU an improved voting system based largely on population size, a president and a foreign minister -- even though they might not be called that. Counterfeit Democracy

Why do we bother to vote for our own MP's to represent us and make our laws in a United Kingdom parliament

The European Parliament for the first time ever is set to vote for criminal penalties – including imprisonment across the EU for counterfeiting and piracy.

MEPs gathering in Strasbourg ftommorrow (Wednesday (25 April) are expected to vote in favour of a first-reading report by Italian socialist MEP Nicola Zingaretti proposing criminal measures aimed at ensuring the enforcement of intellectual property rights across the European Union.

The EU commissioner for justice and home affairs, Franco Frattini, said last year "We decided that counterfeiting is a real crime against industry, constituting a growing business for organised crime and is a real threat for consumers," Frattini said. "Our proposal aims to eradicate safe havens for the criminal organisations on counterfeiting and piracy."

What about our own legislature? This is piracy, a counterfeit democracy at work.
