Gordon Brown has made a passionate bid to reinstate confidence in his leadership of the Labour Party. In a speech he dismissed the Tories' claims that Britain is a "broken society", he insisted: "I don't believe Britain is broken - I think it's the best country in the world. I believe in Britain."



He added: "Let's hear no more from the Conservatives - we did fix the roof while the sun was shining."
