Woe, Woe and Thrice Woe

After the drubbing at the Henley by-election on Thursday and Wendy Alexander's resignation on Saturday, Gordon Brown now faces a troubled summer struggling to retain authority in his own heartland after it was rumoured that David Marshall and his 13,500 majority in a rock-solid Glasgow East constituency is to resign because of allegedly ill health. (yeh)

It is unlikely that Labour will lose its deposit in Glasgow as it did in Henley. And it's highly unlikely that they can lose a 13,500 majority. But having watched the Liberal Democrats win in East Fife two years ago and overturn a majority 11,500, only one thing is certain inside the Bunker that is 10 Downing Street at the moment - the summer recess can't come a moment too soon.

Henley Regrets

Gordon Brown is marking his first anniversary at No 10 with a humiliating defeat at Henley.

Labour came fifth in the race and lost their deposit as they trailed in behind the Greens and the BNP while the Tories' John Howell took the seat with 19,796, a majority of 10,116 over the Liberal Democrats' Stephen Kearney who polled 9,680 votes.

Where Are We

Despite the Irish No vote last week, Gordon Brown decided to proceed with ratification in the UK. The treaty went through parliament earlier this week and the Bill ratifying it received Royal Assent on Thursday.

But yesterday a High Court judge called on the government to delay formal ratification of the European Union's Lisbon treaty until he has ruled on a legal bid to force a referendum.

The formal act of ratification has not yet taken place. It involves depositing legal papers in Rome.

Lord Justice Richards, who is hearing the case, urged the government to hold off completing ratification until his ruling.

"The court is very surprised that the government apparently proposes to ratify while the claimant's challenge to the decision not to hold a referendum on ratification is before the court," Richards wrote in a letter sent to Prime Minister Gordon Brown and the Foreign Office.

So much for entente amicale

Back in March, addressing a joint session of both the Commons and the Lords in the Palace of Westminster, French President Nicholas Sarkozy said France and the UK should put aside "centuries of mistrust" and foster an "entente amicale" for the 21st century.

But at a press conference in Brussels yesterday, Mr Sarkozy blamed Peter Mandelson, the British European Union trade commissioner, for Ireland's rejection of the Lisbon Treaty Telegraph

What say the reeds at Runnymede?

At Runnymede, at Runnymede,
What say the reeds at Runnymede?
The lissom reeds that give and take,
That bend so far, but never break,
They keep the sleepy Thames awake
With tales of John at Runnymede.

At Runnymede, at Runnymede,
Oh, hear the reeds at Runnymede:
'You musn't sell, delay, deny,
A freeman's right or liberty.
It wakes the stubborn Englishry,
We saw 'em roused at Runnymede!

When through our ranks the Barons came,
With little thought of praise or blame,
But resolute to play the game,
They lumbered up to Runnymede;
And there they launched in solid line
The first attack on Right Divine,
The curt uncompromising "Sign!'
They settled John at Runnymede.

At Runnymede, at Runnymede,
Your rights were won at Runnymede!
No freeman shall be fined or bound,
Or dispossessed of freehold ground,
Except by lawful judgment found
And passed upon him by his peers.
Forget not, after all these years,
The Charter signed at Runnymede.'

And still when mob or Monarch lays
Too rude a hand on English ways,
The whisper wakes, the shudder plays,
Across the reeds at Runnymede.
And Thames, that knows the moods of kings,
And crowds and priests and suchlike things,
Rolls deep and dreadful as he brings
Their warning down from Runnymede!

European Union Emperor Jose Manuel Barroso says EU treaty alive despite Irish "No"

"I believe the treaty is alive and we should now try to find a solution,"

The European Union Emperor continued: "The Irish government and the governments of the other member states will now need to assess what this result means for the process. The treaty was signed by all 27 member states, so there is a joint responsibility to address the situation."

Knife Crime

Gordon Brown has urged prosecutors to take many more people to court for knife crime.

The move was announced by the government this morning after prime minister Gordon Brown and home secretary Jacqui Smith met with representatives from the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo) at Downing Street.

As fears grow over people carrying blades, the Prime Minister is calling for fewer cautions to be dished out by police and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

He hosted a breakfast meeting with the CPS, police chiefs and other ministers to discuss the issue, at which he urged a "presumption to prosecute" policy in cases of knife crime be applied more widely.

I wonder if that will include the metaphorical knife

Not Flash Just Gordon

In real life, he is struggling to keep control of his own party while Britain faces economic problems. Daily Telegraph

This is Gordon Brown never seen before - a marvel comic good-guy with chisel-jaw features and a steely resolve.

'SuperGordon' is the hero in the new edition of the U.S-produced Captain Britain cartoon strip in which the British Prime Minister leads a counterattack to destroy the Skrull plan for world domination.

The prime minister devises a masterplan when he discovers that three of his cabinet members are really aliens in disguise who aim to targete the Cheviot Hills, which conceal the gateway to a hidden world of supernatural powers.

The PM, sitting in a room that looks suspiciously like it might overlook Downing Street, commands Captain Britain to spearhead the crucial counter-attack against the the deadly alien force.

He assigns home-grown superheroes - including a female operative named Spitfire - to Britain's top secret MI13 intelligence agency to see off the Skrull threat.

The internationally popular comic first featured Captain Britain in 1976 as the UK equivalent to Captain America.

Deep Thought

Tonight, Jacqui Smith, the Home Secretary, will address Labour MPs at their weekly meeting to try and put forward Gordon Browns position on terror suspects being held for 42 days without charge.

The Prime Minister is facing a defeat on the proposals when they come before the Commons next Wednesday.

Deep Thought is a fictional computer in the book The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy it was created by the pan-dimensional, hyper-intelligent race of beings of planet Magrathea to come up with the ultimate answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything.

When, after seven and a half million years of calculation, the answer finally turns out to be 42, Deep Thought's creators sheepishly realise that they do not know the question whence the ultimate answer turned out to be.
